From Sketch to Page

Peeking behind the curtain is a fun way of seeing what the journey from sketch to page looks like. Maybe because you want to see how a book you love was created, or maybe you are an aspiring author/illustrator yourself.  No matter the reason, we would love to show you a little bit about what our process looks like.

First step is having the desire to create a world where kids can go and learn more about themselves and the world around them.  Once an idea pops into our head we run to jotted it down. Next (and arguably the most important step) is research! Think about the characters and the meaning behind the story. After you have a clear idea, it's time to create your storyboard! Here is a quick look at one of our own:

Once you put words into  paper (manuscript) is time to illustrate. This part is super fun. You get to create characters, places and put your own little style to it all! Doesn't matter if you are an experienced artist or just starting out, practice practice practice and stand behind all your creations!  Here's a look at how one of our first characters came to life. You can see my style has changed, but this 'jibarito' still turned out super cute!
The video below perfectly captures how an idea drawn into a paper became a scene on our children's book: Diego Visits the Island. This one specifically took me around 6 hours to complete. Hope you enjoy watching and if you like this type of behind-the-scene videos don't forget to subscribe to our YouTube channel for more!
